Saint Clair County Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Rat Urine: Is it Toxic? How to Clean Odor

Rat urine can be harmful. Wild rats can carry many different diseases, which are transmitted to humans in their urine. The urine smells similar to other animals' urine because the main components are water and urea. Urea is high in nitrogen and forms ammonia when it breaks down giving it a strong odor. Rat urine also contains minerals such as calcium, which can leave a chalky residue when it dries. Some people describe the smell as 'musky'.

If there is one thing that is a constant with rodents, it is their continuous stream of urine on everything. In the life of a rodent, urine is a universal sign for marking something as safe or friendly (i.e. safe way to travel, safe to eat, safe to chew on, this is my home, my mom, my dad, my kid, etc.). Now, humans do not feel the same way about urine and we find it gross and unsanitary (which it is!). We look for ways for eliminate the smell of urine, not increase it. When uncovering a rodent nest, it is going to reek with the smell of rodent urine. Before we can tackle the smell head on, we need to disinfect the area first

In terms of the most likely to transmit disease, the urine of the rat is certainly the most likely to hold different diseases, and one of the most dangerous is Leptospirosis, which causes some horrible symptoms and is usually transmitted through water or food contaminated with rat urine. In addition, when it comes to rat droppings and urine, dried feces and urine represent the biggest threat to humans when it comes to hantavirus infection. Dried feces crumble easily, resulting in airborne dust. Similarly, when rat urine dries, it becomes almost like dust.

The dust that rat droppings and urine devolve into drying become easily airborne. As a result, this dust can be fairly easily inhaled. If the rat droppings or urine contain a virus like a hantavirus, a person can become infected with that virus simply by breathing.

Removing Rats Urine Odor

If you are cleaning up an area that has been contaminated by rat urine, make sure you take precautions to prevent you from inhaling and spores or bacteria and to protect your eyes from these particles. Because of the dangers that come with rat urine, if you cannot replace or remove the surface where the urine is present, you will need to wash it with a disinfectant to remove any threat. If you are looking at a surface such as insulation in the attic, it is best to replace it where possible, while fabrics that can be removed and washed should be done on a hot wash, and then sprayed with a disinfectant to kill any remaining bacteria.

To remove urine deposits that have already built up, mix white vinegar and water in a spray bottle. One part vinegar to four parts water is usually strong enough. The vinegar helps neutralize the smell and dissolve the deposits. Spray the deposits and leave the mixture for about an hour. Wipe the litter tray or cage bottom clean and scrape away any remaining residue with an old butter knife before rinsing with plain water and drying.
